Workshop: Beyond digital, DiY Sextoys

Location:

This is a short report about the wonderful workshop "DIY beyond digital" by Orit and Carla in Linz which was in fact made possible through the informal exchange on the FACES mailing list. The workshop was promoted under the slogan "stimulate and strengthen your vagina while you run to catch the bus" over Orits and Carlas website (http://www.bricolajesexual.net). But we (Ushi and Olivia) promoted the workshop a bit differently in our local scene (workshop: DIY-chinese loveballs...). That didn't make much difference though - it seemed strange enough to weird people out. Very interesting I thought! A last minute face to face "promotion" tour the evening before the workshop in our local hang-out lead to the result of polite smiles who had a lot of excuses why they couldn't take part. Even more funny I thought but also very strange! The good thing was that during this activities of getting women to come to the workshop we got in closer contact with "maiz", an organisationin Linz by and for migrant women (http://www.maiz.at) who immediately showed their interest. In the end we managed to start the workshop with 11 participants which was perfect. Orit and Carla started with an introductory performance which was brilliant. They talked about the history of sextools as well as the connection of hacking and recycling everyday objects like mobile phones or old CD drives for the purpose of pleasure and building alternative models for a society of consumption. It was very inspiring and opened our minds for the following workshop. The warming up session cleared out any doubts and insecurities. All participants stayed and were ready to start producing chinese loveballs with pleasure and passion. A success!
